Managed Career Solutions (MCS) was awarded a $2.9 million grant over a five year period as part of the American Apprenticeship Grant Initiative, for its role in spearheading the OpenTech LA Regional Apprenticeship Collaborative Program (OpenTech LA). The initiative, announced by President Obama on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 awards $175 million in grants to entities that spur innovation and create employment opportunities by fast-tracking the path to in-demand, well-paying jobs. MCS was recognized as one of only two grantees in the Los Angeles area.
In partnership with employers such as DIRECTV, Sony, Farmers Insurance, and AltaMed, this apprenticeship program is setting a goal to train 1,000 at-risk youth for careers in high-growth technology and biotechnology jobs. The innovation at the heart of its new model is the Talent Incubator, a for-profit social enterprise that creates embedded training models for individuals, like at-risk youth, who need a customized training program in order to succeed. With the involvement of such partners as the County of Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board and the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, OpenTech LA seeks to fully embed apprenticeships within the regional workforce investment system.
